IMO the circular, animated cannonball holes were one of the nicest small QoL changes we've gotten in Blackwake. The previous chunk holes didn't, which made sinking on a badly damaged ship a very weird and immersion-breaking experience, and the gaps were so laughably large in comparison to the rest of the ship that in reality the whole thing would've gone down in seconds.

Fire the cannons, sink enemy ships or board them with firearms and steel. You could have half your ship missing with holes and still be floating when it would take big chunks away. The change to holes instead of giant sections taken out of the ship was largely done for being more realistic I believe. The problem was that the chunks were, well, chunky. Pre version 3.0 of Blackwake the holes were giant sections out of the ship like what you see in the trailer.
